USDA provides 50K grant to Apalachicola Riverkeeper

USDA officials were in Apalachicola on Tuesday to present an oversized check to the Apalachicola Riverkeeper.

The 50 thousand dollar USDA Rural Development Grant will help the group develop recommendations on how best to support navigation and preserve the ecological integrity of the Apalachicola River.

The money will help pay for a study on how the Army Corps of Engineers can manage releases from federal reservoirs on the Apalachicola, Chattahoochee and Flint Rivers to improve navigation and commerce without compromising the Apalachicola Bay.

The project is expected to facilitate rural business development and support economic growth.

The check was presented by USDA Rural Development State Director Richard Machek who said the project has the potential to create real economic opportunities for the communities along the historic river.
