Carrabelle man arrested for killing black bear

A Carrabelle man is facing a felony charge after shooting a black bear with a bow and arrow.
The 175-pound female bear was shot on October 22nd on private property near the St. James Golf Course at Lanark Village.
According the Fish and Wildlife officers, 59 year old Gene Strickland shot the bear after it ran about 50 feet from his tree stand.
He was actually seen shooting the bear by a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission investigator.
Black bears are a protected species in Florida and it is illegal to kill them.
There is no open season for the taking of bears even though Franklin County commissioners have been calling for one for years.
Mister Strickland, who is a dock builder and fishing guide, was charged with one count of killing a black bear and taken to the Franklin County Jail.
His bow and arrow were seized as evidence.
