Motorcyclist hit by black bear

A motorcycle rider in Eastpoint had a close encounter with a black bear on Sunday.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said that a man riding a motorcycle on North Bayshore Drive was hit by a black bear on Sunday when the bear ran across the street near the intersection of Twin Lakes Road.
The man received a broken ankle during the collision, the black bear ran off into the woods; the bear was limping but is not thought to have severe injuries.
He did lose a little hair in the motorcycle’s wheel.
Bears tend to wander more during this time of year looking for food before they begin their winter hibernation.
The bears generally eat about 20 thousand calories a day during this time of year, and while they tend to seek out acorns, they will also eat dog food and even trash.
If you should come across a black bear over the next few months, remember it is illegal to capture, kill or even attempt to kill it because it is a protected species.
If you hit a bear with your vehicle, call your regional FWC office.
Do not approach the animal, even if it appears to be dead.
The animal may just be stunned and could be in severe pain, feel threatened and could be aggressive.
