SANTA ROSA COUNTY
Officers Royce Johnson and Sarah Manning responded to a complaint of dogs trespassing on private property in the Munson area. Several deer dogs were observed running deer on the property without the landowner’s permission. Two of the dogs were caught and the officers determined they were owned by the same hunter. The dog owner was called to the scene to pick up his dogs and was cited for allowing dogs to pursue wildlife on private property without permission.
Officer Steve Hoomes was on patrol in the Blackwater Wildlife Management Area when he observed a hunter travelling through the area. After a brief inspection, Officer Hoomes observed a deer carcass in the bed of the truck. The driver of the vehicle admitted it was a doe that was taken on private property. Officer Hoomes followed the man back to his residence where he interviewed the shooter, the man’s father. Officer Hoomes determined that the men took the deer and did not tag it as required. He cited both subjects for possession of an antlerless deer out of season and for failure to properly tag.
Officer Ben Pineda was on patrol in the Escambia River Wildlife Management Area near Webb Landing when he observed three subjects consuming alcohol in an area where alcohol is prohibited. Officer Pineda made contact with the subjects and smelled a strong odor of marijuana. All three subjects replied, “No” when asked if they had any marijuana. A subsequent investigation determined all three possessed marijuana. Citations were issued to all three for possession of alcoholic beverages within the management area and possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana.
BAY COUNTY
Officer Kenny Atkins was notified that a Panama City Beach police officer had detained a subject who caught and kept two oversize redfish. Officer Atkins arrived, took possession of the redfish, and interviewed the fisherman. Citations for size and bag limit violations were issued.
Lt. Jay Chesser observed a ground blind overlooking bait within the Econfina Wildlife Management Area and located the responsible hunter. While receiving a citation, the hunter said that he is usually 80% legal when he hunts, but from now on, he’ll be 100% legal.
Officers Kenny Atkins and Joe Chambers responded to the Old Gaskin area of Bay County regarding subjects hunting illegally. The officers arrived to find that numerous hunters had paid to be on a lease; however, the lease president had failed to pay the property owner for the rights to hunt the property. The jilted hunters were instructed to take their cancelled checks and receipts to the State Attorney’s Office and pursue their legal options.
Officers Joe Chambers, David Brady, and Neal Goss were working a decoy deer when a vehicle made three passes by their location. On the third pass, the decoy was shot and the vehicle stopped. The occupants, a father and son, were both charged with attempting to take deer at night with a gun and light and road hunting. In addition, the father was charged with possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia. Two rifles were seized (one with the serial number ground off); additional charges are pending.
Officers Dennis Palmer and Kenny Atkins were working in eastern Bay County when they observed a truck enter private property. When the truck was stopped, the driver admitted that he didn’t have permission to be on the property. While talking with the driver, the officers smelled the aroma of burnt cannabis and located cannabis, rolling papers, and a glass pipe. The driver was cited for possession of less than 20 grams of cannabis and possession of drug paraphernalia.
