Plenty of people came out to take part in the 1st annual Oyster Cook-off to raise money for the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department. Warm January weather meant people could sit outside, listen to the live music, and enjoy the smells of various oyster dishes. 15 teams took part in the cook-off, and dishes varied from oyster stuffing and oyster chowder to a number of "baked in the half-shell" dishes. No two were the same.
The three judges, which included Local television chef Jerry Thompson, Department of Agriculture chef Justin Timieri, and yours truly, Oyster Radio News Director Michael Allen. My credentials include a love of oysters ... and that's about it.
A number of local restaurants were among the contestants as were the Eastpoint Fire Department, The Franklin County Sheriff's Office and the St. George Island Civic Club. But the day went to John Hutchison who said he has worked at restaurants before but just really likes to cook. Jeff Ilardi of Eastpoint took second place, and the Owl Cafe' came in third.
I don't yet have the earnings number from the event, but there were hundreds of people there so it probably did real well. Certainly well enough that we will see a second annual event next year.
