St. George Island To Host Snowbird Day February 8
Winter visitors to St George Island can look forward to some special treatment this month when the Island hosts its second SGI Snowbird Day on Tuesday, February 8, 2011.

African American Heritage Festival Feb 19-20, Black History Month Events Countywide Apalachicola will celebrate Black History Month with a two day festival showcasing African American History, Art, and Culture in Apalachicola on Feb. 19-20. The 8th Annual African-American Heritage Festival will highlight both local and national African-American history, food, art and culture with a parade, live entertainment, exhibits, arts and crafts, inspirational speakers, music, dance, poetry and drama. a parade, exhibits and food, music and speakers. Tickets and information available by calling 850-653-8200. | Carrabelle History Museum The Carrabelle History Museum, located in the heart of the City's downtown district is a living history project. Exhibits, artifacts, pottery shards, tools, vintage yearbooks and newspapers present a snapshot of how life and business were conducted in this small fishing community at periods of time stretching back generations. The Museum is open Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. or by appointment. In addition to the downtown History Museum, the Carrabelle area also features two additional museums.
Crooked River Lighthouse & Museum Carrabelle Beach (850/697-8148) The lighthouse was built in 1895 to replace the one on Dog Island destroyed in a hurricane in 1873. The fully-restored lighthouse is located two miles west of Tillie Miller Bridge in the city of Carrabelle. www.crookedriverlighthouse.org Camp Gordon Johnston Museum Carrabelle. (850/697-8575) Established in 1942 for the sole purpose of training amphibious soldiers and their support groups, this camp trained a quarter of a million men, closing in June of 1946. Camp Gordon Johnston Days March 10-12 Carrabelle pays tribute to America’s veterans next month when the Camp Gordon Johnston Association hosts its annual Camp Gordon Johnston Days March 10-12, 2011. The event will feature a golf tournament, fishing tournament, parade and tours. Since the reunion’s inception in 1996, the three day event has evolved into a commemoration of all military veterans, not just those who trained at the camp during WWII. The 29th annual St. George Island Charity Chili Cookoff fires up the burners March 3-5 to herald in what some consider the official beginning of Spring on St. George Island. The festivities begin on Thursday, March 3 with a golf tournament. On Friday, March 4 there will be an art auction preview in which bidders may register to bid on unique pieces of art and collectibles. If you love chili you can eat your fill on Saturday, March 5 as the ICS competition and official auction takes place. The SGI event is the largest regional event in the country. St. Vincent Island Open House March 26
The St. Vincent Island National Wildlife Refuge will host its annual Open House on Saturday March 26 with wildlife exhibits, nature walks, presentations and tours.
