Sea turtle nesting season mixed on St. Vincent Island

Sea turtle nesting season had mixed results on St. Vincent Island in 2010.
According to the Supporters of St. Vincent, 44 turtle nests were found on the Wildlife refuge last year; all of them were from loggerhead turtles.
19 of those nests were moved to Kennedy Space center to protect them from the BP oil gusher.
Nearly 1350 of the eggs left on the island hatched and almost all of the hatchlings made it to the Gulf of Mexico.
Another 1100 eggs hatched at Kennedy Space Center and also made it to the water safely.
18 nests were severely damaged through the season either by weather or predators.
