Historic Venue for Environmental Film Festival One of the venues for the 2011 Wild & Scenic Film Festival will be in Apalachicola's Historic Dixie Theatre. The Dixie Theatre has been a cultural landmark in Apalachicola for almost 100 years. The Dixie Theatre opened in Apalachicola in April 1913, at a time when the town was already abuzz with early prosperity. Click here to learn more about this important historic landmark.

August 6-7 8th Annual Kingfish Shootout This weekend event gives everyone an opportunity to enjoy themselves while advocating a wonderful cause that helps so many. All proceeds go to the Leukemia Research Foundation. August 27 – Franklin County Sheriff Fishing Tournament.

Riverkeepers Host Monthly Paddling Trips
The Apalachicola Riverkeeper group will host a paddling trip on the Apalachicola River August 27. The trips are free to members and $30 for non-members.

Lighthouse Day Shines on Local Historic Landmarks
Franklin County's two historic lighthouses will shine just a bit brighter this month as America pays tribute to these beacons of light during National Lighthouse Day August 7. Check the event schedules at the Cape St. George Lighthouse on St. George Island and the Crooked River Lighthouse at Carrabelle Beach for special climb information relating to Lighthouse Day. A month long celebration of the invention of the ice making machine is planned for August. The Water Street Festival of Ice kicks off Aug. 6 along the Apalachicola Riverfront with an ice cream churn-off, retro-dance party, a jazz concert, ice carving demonstrations, free snow cones and a tribute to Dr. John Gorrie, the Apalachicola doctor who invented the ice making machine in the mid 1900s.
