County commissioners have agreed to schedule a public hearing to change the date that MSBU assessments are due.
MSBU assessments fund local volunteer fire departments; the assessments range from 10 dollars for undeveloped lots to 100 dollars for businesses.
Homeowners pay 50 dollars a year.
Currently the MSBU payments are due on April the 1st, but tax collector James Harris said that is proving to be a little confusing for residents.
He would like to see the delinquency date moved to June the 1st which would make them delinquent after the annual tax sale which is always held on the last day of May.
At that point the county would put a lien on the property for the MSBU plus a 20 dollar recording fee.
This year about 1800 Franklin County properties were delinquent on their MSBU payments.
The county commission said they may try to go a step further and actually add the MSBU charges to the tax bills.
Currently they are sent to taxpayers on a separate piece of paper which some taxpayers ignore.
Clerk of the court Marcia Johnson said adding the MSBU charge to the tax bill would likely lead to more people paying the assessment which is good for local fire departments and for the county.
The board said it will investigate how neighboring counties issue their special assessments and consider the issue further at the public hearing.
