Future of St. Vincent National Wildlife Refuge in question

Dear Supporters of St. Vincent National Wildlife Reserve,

As you are well aware, our country and its citizens are experiencing very difficult economic times. No doubt you have heard about some of the budget-cutting proposals that Congress is considering. This e-mail will focus on one proposal that should be of particular interest to you. This piece of proposed legislation is titled "HR 2584".
    If enacted, this bill would:
        CLOSE 140 National Wildlife Refuges
ELIMINATE over 300 refuge staff positions
ELIMINATE  any new land acquisitions or conservation easements under the Land & Water
            Conservation Fund (LWCF)
PREVENT the USFWS from listing any new species under the Endangered Species Act
ELIMINATE 40 law enforcement officers (at a time when only 213 officers patrol 150
million acres - 845 officers are needed
SLASH the USFWS construction budget to just under $12 million
REDUCE the financial support of our volunteer programs by 15% at a time when volunteers
            are critically needed
        The list goes on .....................
It is too early to tell, but the passage of this bill could have a devastating effect on our beloved island. We are strongly recommending that our membership, and other concerned citizens, contact their political representatives and urge them to vote NO on this bill. You can find out which politician to contact by calling the Capitol Switchboard at 202/224-3121
