FWC to hold public Gopher Tortoise workshop in Wakulla County on Friday

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will hold a workshop in Wakulla County next month to present information on the management plan and permitting guidelines for gopher tortoises.
Gopher tortoises are burrowing turtles that have seen their habitat in Florida decimated by development.
The species is considered threatened by the US Fish and Wildlife Service and by the state of Florida.
Currently the tortoise and its burrow are protected under state law.
Gopher tortoises must be relocated before any land clearing or development takes place, and property owners must obtain permits from the FWC before capturing and relocating tortoises.
The goal of next month’s workshops is to identify ways local governments can participate in protecting the species.
The workshop will be held on July the 8th at the Wakulla County extension office beginning at 9:30 in the morning.
Representatives from neighboring counties are encouraged to attend.
The workshops are free, but registration is required, as space is limited.

To register, please send your name and the name of your organization to Alexandra.Perryman@MyFWC.com.
