Today will be the 24th straight day of 100-degree heat for Dallas. This will tie the city's fourth-longest stretch of consecutive 100° days from 1999 and make it the worst heat wave in more than a decade.
The streak could continue through next week and beyond, breaking more records and keeping the strain on residents.
Dallas and other cities across the region, including Oklahoma City, Okla., and Amarillo, Texas, will have temperatures approaching records over the next few days as temperatures continue rising into the triple digits.
Highs will also rise near 100° much of the week in Houston with AccuWeather.com RealFeel® temperatures near or above
"The air here in Houston is like trying to breathe water," posted Kay B. on our AccuWeather.com Facebook page.
Sizzling temperatures will not stay limited to Texas and Oklahoma all week. Tuesday into Wednesday, the core of the 100-degree heat will expand from Texas and Oklahoma into parts of Kansas, Arkansas and northern Louisiana.
By the end of the week, the hot air will spread all the way to the East Coast once again.
Chances for much-needed rain will generally stay north and east of the worst of the region's drought areas this week. However, the AccuWeather.com Hurricane Center is monitoring the potential for a tropical wave to bring showers and thunderstorms to the Texas coast late in the week.
AccuWeather.com Expert Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski has the details on this potential.
The past nine months (October 2010 to June 2011) have been the driest in Texas history.
