The state is considering some changes to its 11 year old program of testing waters at popular beaches around the state

The state is considering some changes to its 11 year old program of testing waters at popular beaches around the state.
Since 2000, the Florida Department of Health has been performing weekly beach water sampling at 304 locations in 34 counties.
That includes 6 locations in Franklin County and 6 in Gulf County as well as 2 in Wakulla county.
Now the Department of Health is holding public hearings to get input about proposed changes to the program.
Those changes include reducing the number of locations to be monitored, reducing sampling from weekly to biweekly and suspending winter sampling at beaches where swimming is minimal.
The closest public hearing to our area was held last night in Panama City, but people can still make comments through e-mail.
The Department of Health will accept written comments through July 28th.
If anyone is unable to attend a public meeting, but wish to provide comments, concerns or ideas, DOH will accept written correspondence via email no later than July 28, 2011. Emails can be sent to David Polk at david_polk@doh.state.fl.us.
