Florida Water Management Districts get big budget cuts

Water management districts around Florida will have to make do with less money.

There are 5 water management districts around the state charged with protecting the environment and safeguarding the state’s water supply.

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection said that after months of work between DEP and the water management districts, the districts’ budgets will see cuts of more than $700 million dollars.

About 17 million dollars of those cuts will come from the Northwest Florida Water Management District which oversees water resources from Pensacola to Jefferson County.

Those cuts will come in part from removing nearly 6 million dollars from the land acquisition fund and nearly 700 thousand dollars in salary and benefit cuts.

More of the cuts come from the state's decision to stop the sale of water district bonds to buy land, ending membership fees and conference sponsorships.
