Florida to review special taxing districts

Governor Rick Scott is taking a closer look at Special taxing districts across Florida.

Governor Scott issued an executive order Thursday ordering the review of the over 1,600 special districts in Florida.

There are about 21 special districts in Franklin, Gulf and Wakulla counties.

Franklin County’s special districts include he water and sewer districts in Alligator Point and Eastpoint as well as the Dog Island Conservation District.

The governor said the special taxing districts handle more than 15 billion dollars in taxpayer money every year and Floridians have a right to know what they’re being taxed for and how that money is spent.

The districts will be reviewed to see whether they serve the purpose for which they were created, and whether they're spending tax money prudently.

There is no deadline for the study to be complete – it will be done by the governor’s budget office.
