Carrabelle city commission defers alcohol sales decision to planning and zoning board

The Carrabelle City Commission last week decided to let its Planning and Zoning board try to work out a compromise on a proposed change to Carrabelle’s liquor ordinance.

The ordinance, which is nearly 80 years old, requires that businesses that serve alcohol be at least 500 foot away from churches and schools.

The problem is the rule basically keeps alcohol out of most of the city’s commercial district.

In the past few years the city has been looking at alcohol sales on a case- by-case basis.

Now there is a business on Tallahassee Street very near a Methodist Church that would like to be able to sell beer and wine but the request is being opposed by some churches and city residents.

The city commission has already held a public workshop on the issue and was expected to make a final decision last Thursday but found themselves unable to do so.

So instead the board decided to pass the issue down to the Planning and Zoning Board in the hopes it can find a good compromise.

The commission will consider the issue again in March when the board meets again.
