Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council to Convene a Meeting of the Ad Hoc Goliath Grouper Joint Council Steering Committee

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council will hold a meeting of the Ad Hoc Goliath Grouper Joint Council Steering Committee. The Ad Hoc Joint Steering Committee will meet Wednesday, February 29, 2012 from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council office - 2203 N. Lois Avenue, Suite 1100 in Tampa, Florida. 

The Ad Hoc Goliath Grouper Joint Council Steering Committee was formed by motions passed by both the South Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Councils, to explore approaches to move goliath grouper beyond the moratorium and collect information to support an informative assessment that will determine stock status and possible recovery. 

Items on the agenda include:
  • Overview presentation of previous stock assessments
  • Discuss what data will be needed and how these data should be collected
  • Revise Terms of Reference 
  • Establish a process for a workshop
  • Nominate panelists for a workshop
  • Determine what produces are expected from workshop activities
  • Discuss future activities

Although other non-emergency issues not on the agenda may come before the Ad Hoc Goliath Grouper Joint Council Steering Committee for discussion, in accordance with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, those issues may not be the subject of formal action during this meeting. Actions of the Steering Committee will be restricted to those issues identified in the agenda and any issues arising after publication of this notice that require emergency action under Section 305(c) of the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act, provided the public has been notified of the Councils' intent to take action to address the emergency.
 
This meeting is physically accessible to people with disabilities. Requests for sign language interpretation or other auxiliary aids should be directed to Kathy Pereira at the Council at least five working days prior to the meeting.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council is one of eight regional Fishery Management Councils established by the Fishery Conservation and Management Act of 1976. The Council prepares fishery management plans, which are designed to manage fishery resources within the 200-mile limit of the Gulf of Mexico.
