7 day oyster harvesting begins on Friday

Apalachicola bay oyster harvesters will be allowed to work 7 days a week beginning on Friday.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approved the 7 day workweek at their meeting last February.

The new rule takes effect June 1st.

Previously, harvest was not allowed on Fridays and Saturdays from June 1st through August 31st or on Saturdays and Sundays from September 1st through November the 15th.

This increased number of harvesting days was done in response to recent rule changes that drastically cuts the number of hours that oystermen can work during the summer months.

The seven-day work week will hopefully allow Apalachicola Bay oyster harvesters the ability to make up for some time lost in harvesting because of the new earlier delivery times.
