County
commissioners say they will interview candidates for head of the county solid
waste department next month.
The
board is looking for a replacement for long time director Van Johnson who is
retiring at the end of May.
Mister
Johnson said he let current employees apply for his job and two did.
He
already held interviews and had a recommendation for the board – but
commissioners said they will hear his recommendation when they hold interviews
of their own on June the 5th.
In
April, Mister Johnson recommended that long-time assistant director Fonda Davis
take over the director’s job and that Nikki Millender who oversees the county
parks and recreation department become assistant director.
At
the time he said he felt promoting those two would insure a smooth transition
when he leaves the job he has held since 1991.
The
board approved that recommendation on a 3 to 2 vote.
On
Tuesday the board revised that to bringing Fonda on as interim director beginning
June 1st until the commission completes its interviews.
Tuesday’s
meeting was Van’s last as a county department head so commissioners took the
chance to thank mister Johnson’s for his years of service and agreed to have a
special plaque made up to show their appreciation.
Mark
you calendar for May the 31st, by the way, because the board agreed
to make that Van Johnson Day in honor of all of the work Van has done for the
county.
