NOAA reports six fisheries rebuilt in 2011

A record six fish populations were rebuilt to healthy levels in 2011 according to a report to Congress out this week from NOAA Fisheries.

NOAA's Status of U.S. Fisheries report says that the Bering Sea snow crab, the Atlantic coast summer flounder, Gulf of Maine haddock, northern California coast Chinook salmon, Washington coast coho salmon, and Pacific coast widow rockfish have been fully rebuilt to healthy levels.

That makes 27 rebuilt U.S. marine fish populations over the last 11 years.

NOAA Fisheries also reported other positive news in that 86 percent of the fish populations examined for fishing activity were not being fished at too high a level, compared to 84 percent in 2011.
