Power company to step up plans of connecting St. George Island to new electric system

Power outage update for St. George Island.

Power has been out on St. George Island since early Sunday morning, and it could be days before it is restored.

Progress Energy reports that three of the wooden power poles that currently connect St. George Island to Eastpoint have been destroyed.

Progress Energy does not plan to repair the poles.

Instead the company plans to step up the program to connect to the new concrete poles they have installed about 5000 feet east of the existing poles.

The plan was to connect to the new system on July 9th, but now the connections will be done as soon as the weather clears up enough for power company workers to do the work safely.
