St. George Island sea turtle nests hit hard by tropical Storm Debby

Tropical storm Debby wiped out almost all of the sea turtle nests on St. George Island.

According to Bruce Drye, the marine turtle permit holder for St. George Island, only ten nests remain of the 178 nests that were known on the island before the storm.

Much of the equipment used to mark the nests has also been washed away and if you should find any of the equipment, Mister Drye would appreciate its return so it can be used for more nests that will hopefully be laid on the island this summer.

The equipment includes 4 foot long pvc posts with yellow turtle nest signs attched, 4 foot wooden stakes, and shorter wooden stakes with notches cut into them to hold down predator screens.

There are also 3 foot square and 4 foot square predator screens with 2 inch by 4 inch mesh.

If you are walking the beach be especially careful of the predator screens as they could be painful to step on.

If you should find any of the equipment please drop it off at 564 West Pine Street on St. George Island.
