Firefighters on St. George Island were able to save a home
that caught on fire on Sunday.
It
didn’t hurt that the home was right next door to the fire station in the St.
George Plantation .
Fire
chief Jay Abbott said the rental home at 1204 Sandy Lane caught on fire around 5:30 Sunday afternoon.
Fire
fighters were on scene for about 2 hours.
No
one was injured in the blaze.
The
fire was reported by someone walking along the beach who saw smoke coming from
the home.
The
home, a single story on pilings, suffered about 10 thousand dollars worth of
damage, much of that was water damage from putting the fire out.
Chief
Abbott said the fire started in the chimney, and he’s afraid we may see more of
these types of fires as the temperatures drop.
Chimneys
tend to collect not only soot and sap from previous fires but also flammable
materials from outdoors.
If
you own a home with a chimney, fire officials recommend that it be cleaned at
least once a year by a professional chimney sweep.
