Only one bid for landfill transfer station - expect prices to rise

County Commissioners opened bids Wednesday from companies interested in operating the transfer station at the Franklin county landfill, but the only company that put in a bid is the company that already holds the contract for the work.

Waste Management was the only bidder for the work – their bid came in at 57 dollars and 95 cents per pound.

That’s about 10 dollars more per pound than the company is charging now and those costs will have to passed on to landfill customers.

For the past fifteen years Waste management has held the contract to operate the transfer station which allows them to transport municipal solid waste out of the county for disposal.

The county had the option of extending the contract for another five years, but decided to seek bids after learning the new contract would actually cost the county money.

The current contract with Waste Management ends on March 25th.

The last time the county sought bids, Waste Management was also the only company to apply.
