Area 1612 closed to oyster harvesting because of river flooding

The Department of Agriculture has closed oyster harvesting area 1612 of the Apalachicola bay because of high water in the Apalachicola River.

The area is closest to the mouth of the river.

The river is currently about 6 feet above flood stage at Blountstown and it takes a few days for that water to push through into the Bay.

State biologists will continue to take water samples from area 1612 and will reopen the area when the sample results conform to the management plan.
Oystermen can get daily bay status updates on the internet at www.FloridaAquaculture.com under the shellfish harvesting tab.
You can also hear a detailed pre-recorded message of open and closed shellfish harvest areas 24 hours a day by calling 653-8317
