Florida leads the world in shark attacks in 2012



The number of Shark attacks in US waters was at a 12 year high last year – with Florida leading the way.

There were 53 unprovoked Shark attacks in US waters last year – the most since 2000.

26 of the attacks happened in the Sunshine State.

Nearly all of the attacks in Florida were in the southern portion of the state with 8 in Brevard County and 7 more in Volusia County.

There was one shark related fatality in the US last year – that happened in California.

8 other states also reported shark attacks in 2012, including 10 in Hawaii, 5 in South Carolina, 2 in North Carolina and one each in Georgia, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Puerto Rico.

World-wide there were 80 attacks with 7 fatalities.
Researchers documented unprovoked attacks in a number of countries including 14 in Australia 4 in South Africa, 4 in Reunion and single incidents in The Canary Islands, Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, and Tonga. 
About 60 percent of the attacks were on surfers followed by swimmers and then scuba divers.
