County commission supports holding Senate Commission meeting in Franklin County

County commissioners have issued a letter of support to hold a US Senate commission meeting in Apalachicola.

Senator Marco Rubio requested the letter of support and is working to have the Senate commission on Commerce, Science and Transportation hold a public meeting in Franklin county to examine the impact of decreased water flow in the Apalachicola River on local industries.

County administrative director Alana Pierce said if the commission agrees to meet here it would be the first time a senate hearing has been held in the county.

Commissioners said they are happy to support the move because it would draw much needed attention to the plight of the local seafood industry and the need to keep adequate water flows from the Apalachicola River into the Apalachicola Bay.

One catch is that the county may not have a meeting room big enough for the hearing.

Its likely a senate commission meeting would draw hundreds of people, and the only potential sites are the upstairs courtroom in the courthouse or possible the cafeteria at the Franklin county school.

Commissioners said they would have the Clerk of Court consider the options for a suitable meeting location.
