GAINESVILLE, Fla. --- Apalachicola oystermen and residents will learn about oyster aquaculture from members of the University of Florida-based Oyster Recovery Team at a public meeting 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Monday, July 29 at the Apalachicola Community Center.
Reporters and members of the public are invited to attend the informal question-and-answer session.
Karl Havens, leader of the team and director of the Florida Sea Grant program, said the event was spurred by inquiries from members of the oyster industry and the Apalachicola community, who wonder if culturing oysters is a feasible long-term endeavor in a bay that in most years has an abundance of wild oysters known nationwide for their high quality.
“The members of the UF team with expertise in aquaculture methods and economics will answer questions about all aspects of its feasibility,” Havens said.
