Franklin county to consider "Nuisance Abatement Ordinance"

The Franklin county commission has agreed to create a Nuisance Abatement Ordinance which should make it easier for the county to clean up private property after a disaster.

The action was taken at the request of Emergency Management director Pam Brownell who said the ordinance would allow debris removal crews to go on to private property in some circumstances to protect public safety.

Once the ordinance is in place, the county would be able to seek approval from FEMA to remove public safety hazards from private property after a hurricane or other major disaster.

Miss Brownell said debris removal crews would be able to remove fallen trees that might threaten a roadway or other public safety hazards if the landowner does not do the work himself for whatever reason.

FEMA would have to approve any work that would require the county to go on public property, but the county would then be able to get FEMA reimbursement for the work that they do.

Pam Brownell will now work with the county attorney on the wording of the Nuisance Abatement Ordinance for approval at a future meeting.
