Never leave your Yamaha Wave Runner unsecured on Fridays in July

The number of boats stolen in the US last year dropped by 3 percent from 2011 but Florida continues to lead the nation in the number of boat thefts.

The numbers are from The National Insurance Crime Bureau which this week released its latest report on boat theft and recoveries in the
United States.

Overall, there were 5,870 watercraft thefts in 2012, that’s down from 6,070 thefts reported in 2011.

The top five states for thefts were
Florida with 1,408 thefts followed by California, Texas, Washington and North Carolina.

Jet skis were the most popular type of vessel for thieves to take, followed by runabouts, utility boats, cruisers and sailboats.

Most theft activity occurred during the spring and summer months.

July saw the highest number of reported thefts while February had the fewest.

Most thefts were reported on Fridays with the fewest being reported on Thursdays.
