Recent vibrio vulnificus case reported in Gulf County

The Florida Department of Health says there have been two more cases of Vibrio vulnificus in Florida, bringing the total cases recorded this year to 36.

That’s the highest number of cases Florida has seen in many years

One of the most recent cases was reported in Gulf County.

There have been 10 deaths associated with Vibrio Vulnificus in Florida this year.

That’s the most since 2011 when there were 13 vibrio deaths.

Vibrio occurs naturally in the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico, people can get it by eating raw shellfish or by getting seawater on an open wound.

Its harmless to most people, but if you have a pre-existing health issue like cancer, diabetes or cirrhosis of the liver, or any disease that weakens your immune system, Vibrio can be deadly.

People with weakened immune systems should never eat raw protein, especially oysters, and should stay out of the water if they have an open wound of any kind.
