Be careful which charities you donate to during the holiday season

There are a lot of charities seeking donations this time of year, but remember not all of them are legitimate.

The Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services keeps a list on-line of charities registered to solicit in Florida.

You can find it at 800helpfla.com or by calling 1-800 HELP-FLA.

The Department also says there are certain things you should consider before making a charitable contribution this holiday season.

Most importantly, know who you are giving to.

You can also maximize your gift by finding out if your employer will match your charitable contribution..

And since most charitable donations are tax-deductible, make sure you get the proper documentation, so that you can deduct your contribution at tax time.

You should automatically receive a receipt from the organization - Don’t rely on a cancelled check to count as a receipt.
