Oyster Cook-off returns to Apalachicola this weekend

Come out and help raise some money for the Apalachicola Volunteer Fire Department this weekend at the fourth annual oyster cookoff.

Last year the event grossed well over 30 thousand dollars for the fire department, and this year is expected to be even bigger – with more contestants in the cook-off and plenty of food and live music.

Last year’s winner, the Eastpoint Volunteer Fire Department, will be back to defend its title.

This year’s event will include a silent art auction from 6:00pm – 8:00pm on Friday night at the Apalachicola Center for History, Culture and Arts at 86 Water Street.

Saturday’s festivities will begin at 8am with the 5.5K Half Shell Hustle race along the river and through the southside Historic District.

The rest of the events are from 12:00pm-5:00pm at Riverfront Park with judging of contestants’ oyster dishes, children’s activities and live blues music by the Eric Culberson Band.

Several types of seafood will be offered for sale such as fried, baked, and raw oysters, oyster stew, smoked mullet, and fresh shrimp.
