County officials voice concerns over FEMA funding for Alligator Point

County officials are getting a little concerned that federal money for projects at Alligator Point could disappear soon and there’s not much they can do about it.

County Administrative Director Alan Pierce said that he has asked for a time extension to use a grant from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to repair about 1000 feet of revetment east of Tom Roberts Road.

The county opened the bids on the project in early March, but was unable to award a bid because the work is under litigation between Capital City Bank and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection.

Mister pierce said a number of projects at the point have been tied up for nearly 9 years and if the FEMA money isn’t used the time is coming when the county could lose that money.

Commission chairman Cheryl Sanders said the county is subject to lose a lot of money if the legal issues continue much longer.

Mister Pierce said there is a bright side; the oldest grants the county has with FEMA are not under litigation and those projects could be completed by this summer.
