Franklin County adds more roads to SCOP wish list

Franklin County has a number of big projects coming up under the Small County Outreach program, but hope they can get a few more roads added to the list.

This year the program is paying for resurfacing and widening projects on Oak St. in Lanark Village and Bayshore Drive in Eastpoint.

In 2016 Bald Point Road will be resurfaced from beginning to end, in 2017 it will resurface Ellis Van Vleet in Apalachicola and is 2018 it will pay for a Bike Path on Island Drive from Highway 98 to base of St. George Island Bridge.

The Small County Outreach program focus on roads that relieve the state highway system of traffic and roads that serve as evacuation routes.

Generally the program doesn’t address unpaved roads, but there may be some additional funding coming up that would allow for some roads to be paved.

The county agreed last week to add three roads to the request list, including Pine St. on St. George Island; Mill Road in Carrabelle, and Teat Road west of Apalachicola.

Commissioner Pinki Jackel said the application should emphasize that all three of these roads are important evacuation routes and are huge projects for which there will never be enough county money to get done.
