From the Director
Our new year begins in June. We will elect new board members and officers for the 2014-2015 year at our June 4th, luncheon to be held at First United Methodist Church in Apalachicola. Be sure to attend for the election but also for the great food. Willing to continue for another term are: Mike Koun, Brenda Ash, Donna Duncan, Jean Ulrich, Bud Hayes, Bev Hewitt, Kristin Anderson, Michael Shuler, Jerry Hall , Ginny Griner, and John Solomon. We would like to thank our retiring director Ouida Tartt, owner of the House of Tartts, for her service and support. The board will draw up a slate of candidates and officers for the election at ourMonday, June 2nd, board meeting. We will also email this to the member along with updates for our bylaws.
Membership renewals will be sent out next week. The basic membership is still $195 per year. For only $16.29 per month you get: Exposure on the Forgotten Coast best website, listing in the area's premier Visitors Guide and map, inclusion in the tourist information packets and relocation packets sent directly to people looking to visitor or relocate, brochure space in the Visitor Center staffed Monday through Saturday, with knowledgeable, professional staff to answer questions and help locate services and products. Area magazines charge over triple the amount of our annual dues for just one ad and they still do not have the distribution that the Chamber has. Hong Kong Bistro
Jeff Liu and Raymond Liu joined he chamber with their restaurant Hong Kong Bistro, the local Chinese-Asian restaurant. Jeff and Raymond are brothers. Jeff opened the restaurant four and half years ago. Raymond worked as a chef in New York City for ten years before joining his brother in Apalachicola. Jeff just opened in his new location at 238 US Highway 98, in the old Red Top Cafe location. Jeff says they plan to start offering Asian fusion dishes soon. Almost 40% of small businesses that close due to a disaster never re-open. Hurricane season is almost here. Are you ready? Small businesses are the economy of Franklin County. They provide most of the employment and generate most of the income for local folks. What would you do if the building your business is located within was damaged or destroyed in a disaster? Where would you go to continue providing your customers with your business services? Would you be prepared and have the correct resources, databases, contact information and other necessary items to adapt to these changes? St George Plantation Receives Award The Florida Communities of Excellence Awards Program recognized St George Plantation Owners' Association as one of twenty winners in its annual statewide awards gala in Orlando on May 2. The Plantation was selected in the category of Florida-Friendly Landscaping for its environmentally sound landscape and wetland preservation and maintenance efforts. General Manager Karen Rudder was on hand at the event to receive the award on behalf of the association."Our owners in the Plantation have always been committed to preserving the natural beauty of the island," Rudder stated, "but in 2011, the Board began developing a Master Landscaping Plan, with the help of landscape architect, Patrick Hodges Land Studio of Tallahassee. This Plan is the blueprint that will sustain and enhance our native environment for the next generation through the use of Florida-Friendly landscaping principles. "
Sacred Heart Opens Rehab Office
Sacred Heart will open a rehabilitation and physical therapy office in Apalachicola on June 4th. The office is under the direction of Joe Santiesteban, PhD, PT. Everyone is invited to an open house on June 12th, from 9:00 am-noon and 3:00-6:00 pm. There will be a ribbon cutting at 9:30 am. The office is below Up The Stairs where we will be having our June Business After Hours meeting.
Healthy Start Baby Shower
If you live in Gulf or Franklin County and are pregnant or have had a baby within the last six months, you and your family members are welcome to join us for the 6th Annual Healthy Start Baby Shower on Tuesday, June 3rd, at 4:00pm, at the Centennial Building in Port St. Joe. Full Moon Climb
The Cape St. George Lighthouse will have a Full Moon Climb on June 12. The sunset/full moon climb happens from 8:00 p.m. -9:30 p.m. and will include light hors d'oeuvres and a sparkling cider toast to the full moon. The cost is $15.00 for the general public and $10.00 for members of the St. George Lighthouse Association. After sunset, climbers can view the full moon from the top of the lighthouse at the cost of $5 for members and $10 for non-members. Space is limited. Reservations are recommended (850) 927-7744.
15th Annual Kids Fishing Tournament
Charles and Rex Pennycuff are hosting their 15th annual Fisherman's Choice Youth Fishing Tournament on June 7th. Kids 16 and under will fish for fresh and saltwater species. Each entry receives a t-shirt, and after the tournament, entrees are invited to attend a cookout at Fisherman's Choice where they will weigh in their fish, eat hot dogs and hamburgers and get some great prizes. In years past, Rex says they gave away 170 rods and reels, tackle boxes and a dozen cast nets. Prizes are given for 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place, and include all major fish species. SGI Mullet Toss
The annual SGI Mullet Toss will be held June 7th, at the public beach in front of the Blue Parrot Ocean Front Café. There are men's, women's and children's divisions. Folks line up and pay a small entry fee that goes to charity for the privilege of flinging a fish for distance and prizes. To participate, just show up Saturday morning at 10:00 am June 7.
