Don't pay too much for public records

The clerk of the courts office is warning residents not to pay too much for public records.

There are letters being sent out to property owners by a group calling itself the “local records office” that offers to provide copies of your property deed and a complete property profile for 89 dollars.

The letters generally come from a Tallahassee address, the clerk’s office says they’ve been going around for a few years.

There’s nothing illegal about the offer, but it is misleading because deeds and other public records are available to you on-line or at the clerk’s office and they are generally free.

Most of the records are available on-line for free at franklinclerk.com.

Or you can get hard copies from the clerk of the courts office at the Franklin county courthouse for 1 dollar per page.

Certified documents are only 2 dollars more.

If you have questions about the types of public records you can get from the clerks office, you can always call them at 653-8861 extension 103.
