State
biologists are looking for help with an ongoing tarpon study.
The purpose of the study,
which started in 2006, is to collect genetic information from tarpon to gauge
their survival, health and movement in Florida waters.
Tarpon fishermen can help
in the study by collecting DNA
samples from any tarpon over 30 inches they catch in state waters.
Scientists can then
compare the DNA samples with samples they already have on hand.
The study began in 2006
and biologist have catalogued more than 22 thousand samples and identified 217
recaptured tarpon.
If you would like to help
in the study you can get an easy-to-use tarpon DNA sampling kit by emailing TarponGenetics@MyFWC.com.
Participating fishermen
will also get a newsletter with updates on the study and be entered into an
end-of-year raffle for various prizes.

Genetic Recapture Study at MyFWC.com/.
