FWC holds Bear Management Stakeholder Meeting tonight at City of Carrabelle Auditorium

FWC holds Bear Management Stakeholder Meeting tonight May 15 at 6:30 pm at  City of Carrabelle Auditorium, 1001 Gray Ave.

As you know, human-bear conflicts are on the rise in the east panhandle of Florida.  The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) would like to meet with city, county, state, and federal government officials and partner agencies to discuss the current situation, potential options for reducing conflicts, and long term plans for management of bears in the east panhandle of Florida.

In 2012, FWC created the Florida Black Bear Management Plan, which calls for the creation of seven Bear Management Units (BMU) statewide.  The BMUs allow FWC to consider the specific characteristics and issues of the different geographical areas where bears reside when making bear management decisions.  The next BMU we will start is the East Panhandle Bear Management Unit, which includes the counties of Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gadsden, Gulf, Jackson, Jefferson, Leon, Liberty, Madison, Taylor, Wakulla, and Washington.  As a partner agency in conservation, we would like your participation on a stakeholder group that would provide input to FWC on the management of bears in your area.
