SOUTHERLAND HAILS WATER RESOURCES VICTORY FOR NORTH FLORIDA

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, II today applauded House and Senate negotiators on the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) for including in the final bill a provision that does more to secure North Florida’s access to downstream water flows than any legislation in recent memory.  Southerland has taken a leading role in working with the House Transportation Committee to ensure the bicameral bill prompts Florida, Alabama, and Georgia to achieve a fair tri-state water compact while opening the door to congressional intervention if an agreement is not reached.

“I can’t overstate the significance of this WRRDA bill for North Florida’s oystermen and the families who live along the Apalachicola River and Bay,” said Southerland.  “While our tireless efforts have yielded a victory that’s been a long time coming, the fight to restore these hardworking communities continues.  I remain committed to working with local officials and coastal families to preserve their unique and treasured heritage.”

The WRRDA conference report awaits a final vote in the full House and Senate before being sent to President Obama to be signed into law.
