SOUTHERLAND SEEKS IMMEDIATE RELIEF FOR GULF FISHERMEN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Rep. Steve Southerland, II authored a letter this week to U.S. Commerce Secretary Penny Pritzker outlining immediate actions she can take to address the insufficient nine-day red snapper season recently handed down to Gulf of Mexico fishermen.

“The government’s continued mismanagement of the Gulf of Mexico fishery has caused serious harm to Florida’s coastal economies,” said Southerland.  “While it is clear long-term changes are needed, I have outlined immediate actions Secretary Pritzker can take to provide much-needed relief to our hardworking fishermen.  I am hopeful the Secretary will recognize the severity of this situation and restore the certainty our coastal communities deserve.”

Southerland will be offering several fishery related amendments tomorrow when the House Committee on Natural Resources marks up the Magnuson-Stevens Act (MSA), the primary law governing fisheries in the United States.  Southerland will also be offering an amendment tomorrow before the full House to prohibit funding for new catch shares in the FY2015 Commerce, Justice, Science (CJS) Appropriations bill.
