FCAT scores for reading, math and science were released last week.
56 percent of local 3rd through 5th graders scored at grade level or above on the reading section, up from 51 percent in 2013.
The statewide average was 60 percent.
53 percent of local 6th through 8th graders were reading at grade level or above, thats the same as last year – statewide the score rose slightly to 57 percent.
The biggest gains in reading scores were seen in the 9th and 10th grades where 53 percent of students were reading at grade level, up from only 38 percent in 2013.
That was just slightly below the state average of 54 percent.
Local 3rd through 5th graders also showed better math scores – 58 percent scored at grade level or better on this year’s math section of the FCAT, up from 52 percent the year before.
The state wide average was 59 percent.
6th through 8th graders showed a slight decline in math scores from 54 to 52 percent.
Science scores were mixed, 57 percent of 5th graders scored at grade level or above in science up slightly from 56 percent the year before.
That beat state average of 54 percent.
8th grade science scores fell slightly from 51 to 49 percent.
The statewide average was also 49 percent.
