A series of new artificial reefs will be
deployed about 10 miles off of Carrabelle in early to mid June and will
hopefully become a nice draw for fishermen and divers.
The new reefs will be placed just a little south of the
popular “Robby’s Reef” which was deployed in 2011.
The reef is part of a joint project between The Organization for Artificial Reefs and the City of Carrabelle .
The reef system will cost around 120 thousand dollars which
includes 55 thousand dollars from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation
Commission, about 15 thousand dollars from OAR and the rest from private donors.
The project will include three patch reefs using a new reef
module called the "Super Reef".
The three Super Reefs planned for this deployment are large
concrete and limestone prefab reef structures, and will tower 15 feet above the
gulf sea floor in a depth of 60 feet.
The placement of the Super Reef forms will be framed with
ten 8 foot tall reef structures known as "Florida Specials", which
also utilize native Florida limestone as part of their makeup.
All total, this project will utilize three Super Reefs, and
thirty Florida Specials.
At the same time, contractors will enhance Robby's Reef,
which will add another 8 artificial reef units to the patch reef deployed in
2011.
At this time deployment is expected to occur between June
the 9th and 13th depending on weather – and the project
could take up to two days to complete.
The center coordinates listed for the Camp
Memorial Reef are given in "Decimal Minutes" format and listed
as:
N 29 39.229
W 84 30.000
