Lightning poses a real danger in the Sunshine State

This is the time of year that afternoon rain and thunderstorms are common, and lightning can pose a real danger in Florida.

June, July, and August are the peak months for lightning activity across the United States

Florida is known for being the deadliest state in the country for lightning strikes.

There are well over a million lightning strikes in Florida each year.

There have been 9 deaths attributed to lightning across the US this year – four of them have occurred in the Sunshine State.

One of the most dangerous things you can do during a lightning storm is be fishing.

From 2006 to 2013, 30 people died nationwide while fishing during lightning storms, there were 16 camping deaths, 14 boating deaths and 13 beach deaths.

Lightning can strike from 10 miles away, so if people can hear thunder, they are in danger of being struck by lightning.

The only safe places to be during a thunderstorm are in a building or in a car.
