Franklin County Commission approves visitor center contracts

Franklin County commissioners on Tuesday approved the contracts for the county’s four visitor centers.
The county has four visitor’s centers in St. George Island, Apalachicola, Carrabelle, and soon in Eastpoint.
The centers are funded through the Tourist Development Council.
The Centers in Apalachicola and Carrabelle are operated by the chambers of commerce.
The one on St. George Island is managed by the Maritime Museum.
Each of the groups gets 35 thousand dollars to operate the centers.
The Eastpoint Center is being renovated because it used to be a Highway Patrol Station.
Once the work is complete, the Tourist Development Council will move its administrative offices to the building and try to operate the center itself.
The TDC is currently housed at the old Apalachicola High School.

There was some discussion about how far out of the way the Eastpoint visitors’ center is, but the board agreed to try the location for the next year to see how it works.
