Franklin
county Commissioners are taking a proactive step to protect people’s views of
the beach and the water on the west end of Alligator Point and to protect homes
from potential dangerous debris during major storms.
On Tuesday the commission was provided a draft ordinance
prohibiting roofs on detached structures seaward of the Coastal Construction
Control Line on the west end of Alligator Point.
The county feels the rule is needed after the Department of
Environmental Protection decided to allow beach viewing platforms on Alligator
Point seaward of previous structures.
If the rule passes it would keep waterfront homeowners from
putting roofs on any beach viewing platform they might want to put in front of
their home seaward of the Coastal Construction Control Line.
County Administrative Director Alan Pierce said the issue is
a safety issue as those structures will have a greater chance of becoming
airborne during a storm and causing damage.
The west end of Alligator Point has an extremely flat beach
and is very vulnerable to storm events.
The commission agreed to move forward with the issue and
voted this week to have their attorney review the ordinance and schedule a
public hearing.
