Duke Energy customers will soon see
a small drop in their electric bills.
Duke Energy Florida is Florida’s
second largest investor-owned utility and serves 1.7 million customers.
The Florida Public Service
Commission on Thursday ordered that a credit be given to Duke Energy customers
for $54 million dollars in equipment that was never received for the Levy
Nuclear Power Plant Project.
The Levy plant is one of two
projects that never came to fruition but ratepayers still paid for it.
Duke is suing a contractor from
the Levy project for $54 million alleging they failed to deliver nuclear
components.
Duke Energy said it would return
the money to ratepayers only if they win the lawsuit.
The Public Service Commission on
Thursday said they don’t feel customers should have to wait.
Customers should see the removal
of the $3.45 a month charge that was agreed to in order to recover remaining
costs associated with the Power Plant project.
Because of the credit approved
this week, the charge will now be removed much earlier than was anticipated.
The Public Service Commission said
this is the right decision to make for Duke’s ratepayers who have carried a
significant financial load without the benefit they thought they would receive.
