Franklin County has
been awarded a state grant to help repair the roof at the Chapman Auditorium in
Apalachicola.
A study by the University of Florida called
the Chapman building one of the 11 most endangered historic buildings in the
state of Florida.
The roof over the auditorium area of the
historic building has experienced several leaks since Tropical Storm Debbie in
2012 – but FEMA was unwilling to pay for repairs saying the roof had outlived
its life expectancy.
Last week the county was awarded a state Historic
Preservation grant which will cover 50 thousand dollars of the cost of
repairing the roof.
The total cost is estimated around 70
thousand dollars and the county will have to cover the additional expenses.
The county expects to receive a second Historic
Preservation grant this week for 350 thousand dollars for work at the Armory in
Apalachicola.
The county is currently
in the process of repairing and upgrading the 114 year old armory so it can be
used as a convention center and destination for private events like weddings.
This grant will likely go toward
replacing the windows and finishing a catering kitchen for the historic
structure as part of a much larger renovation project that includes stabilizing
the building and fixing some drainage issues as well as adding about 40 tons of
air conditioning to the historic building.
