Florida State University’s Coastal and Marine Laboratory is inviting beach and water lovers from across the Big Bend area to pack up the family and head to St. Teresa for the third annual Whatever Floats Your Boat Regatta from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 11.
The regatta features “boats” made from scratch by participating teams that are raced around a predetermined course for fun and prizes. Stressing an environmental conservation theme, each “boat” must be created from a list of approved recyclable materials and, at least initially, should be able to float. Past regattas have included boats made entirely out of materials such as aluminum cans and plastic bottles, and featured boat shapes ranging from canoes to giant sea turtles.
“We live in a fantastic community – one that extends even beyond the Franklin, Wakulla, and Leon County borders – that supports us in so many ways,” said Felicia Coleman, director of the Coastal and Marine Laboratory. “Whatever Floats Your Boat is how we let our hair down with those folks while slyly getting the message across that caring for the ocean is up to all of us.”
With race objectives and prizes aimed more at staying afloat than being the fastest to the finish line, fun and laughter are the themes of the day. Prize categories for regatta participants include the following:
- Most creative use of materials
- First boat to cross the finish line
- Most spectacular failure
- People’s Choice award
The regatta will take place:
NOON – 5 P.M.
SATURDAY, OCT. 11
FSU COASTAL AND MARINE LABORATORY
3618 COASTAL HIGHWAY 98
ST. TERESA, FLA.
The race will be fully visible from various shoreline vantage points around the Marine Lab and the nearby boat basin. Other festivities surrounding the regatta include live music by Belle and the Band, and food for purchase from Coastal Restaurant.
