City Hosts Sea-Level Rise Workshop Today at 4:30 pm
The Apalachicola Planning & Zoning (P&Z) Board will host the third in a series of flood-related workshops this afternoon at the Battery Park Community Center. Today's workshop, which begins at 4:30 p.m., will feature a presentation by invited state historic and floodplain management experts on the potential impacts of sea-level rise on the City of Apalachicola’s historic resources along with a general discussion on how other communities are adapting and options for accommodating historic preservation and redevelopment within floodprone areas.
Barbara Hines, registered professional archaeologist with the Florida Public Archeology Network, will present findings and analysis of research modeling that projects potential impacts of coastal sea-level rise on the City of Apalachicola’s archeological and historic resources. Ms. Hines will also share information from historical communities that have begun to address the issue.
Anita Grove, Coastal Training Program Coordinator fo the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve will present information from NOAA’s Digital Coast Mapping program that helps illustrate a community’s potential exposure to inundation from coastal flooding based on digital elevation models.
Steve Martin, CFM, State Floodplain Manager, Florida Division of Emergency Management will be on hand to answer questions about the current FEMA mandates and provide insight on historic preservation/development options from a FEMA flood regulatory perspective.
Today's workshop relates to ongoing P&Z discussions about stormwater and floodplain management planning in the City. Previous workshops over the past three months have focused on stormwater management planning and floodplain management challenges. Today's workshop will precede P&Z’s regular meeting scheduled for 6 p.m.
The Apalachicola P&Z board hosts monthly planning workshops prior to its regularly scheduled meetings in an ongoing effort to address planning issues relevant to the City.
